The Solana Foundation remote procedure call (RPC) endpoints went offline on January 8 as a result of a bug in test version 1.14 of the Validator client.
According to an update from Solana Status, the error affected those nodes that adopted the latest test version and advised those operating on the node to switch to 1.13. RPC endpoints are essentially the nodes that connect decentralized applications (DApps) and wallets to the blockchain.
However, the incident did not affect Solana’s block production, unlike previous cases of outages that froze the network’s ability to produce blocks for hours.
“The Mainnet beta Explorer and Solana Foundation Public RPC endpoints are currently offline as the RPC node software is updated, following a bug in test version 1.14. Block production has not been affected and the Solana network has not been affected.”
The bug only affected foundation-run RPCs, while private ones offered by companies including Triton, QuickNode, and Alchemy, on the other hand, remained operational. Clarifying that the affected RPCs represent only a small subset of Solana’s RPC infrastructure, Austin Federa, Head of Strategy and Communications for the Solana Foundation, stated:
“The Solana Foundation RPCs are a severely limited service that is not designed for anything production grade, just for testing and casual use. The Solana Foundation RPC infrastructure is intentionally at the forefront of release candidates to do just this: find bugs in low-impact situations.”
Solana suffered a handful of outages and transaction halts last year amid the crushing crypto winter, which dragged down the price of SOL massively. 2023, however, started on a rather positive note for the native token. In fact, SOL saw the best first week of the year out of the top 20 crypto assets by market capitalization. In the last 24 hours alone, SOL is up 22% and is currently trading above $16.
