The Polygon network was down from 5:50 pm UTC on March 10 to approximately 4 am UTC on March 11. All user funds are safe and the team explained the particular issues why the network was not operational during these 11 hours.

The cause of the polygon problem

Yesterday, Polygon developers notified users of potential network downtime due to a planned network update: the Heimdall node.

The Heimdall implementation is used by one of the two layers of the network’s proof-of-stake chain. The team confirmed the downtime at 5:50 pm UTC on March 10 and provided further clarification. It is worth noting that user funds were not compromised during the outage.

While we are working to identify the definitive cause, it appears to have originated from a previous update consisting of a minot parameterization fix in the Ethereum to Polygon PoS state sync/bridge module.

The team also revealed that “there may have been a bug” in the update, which affected the consensus and led to different Heimdall validators being on different versions of the blockchain. This prevented them from reaching a 2/3 consensus.

When using Tenderming consensus, this situation will cause the Heimdall chain to stop.

The developers also reaffirmed that Heimdall does not handle user transactions, but instead is used for bridges and validator-related transactions.

Additionally, the team explained that the Bor chain, which is Polygon’s user-facing PoS chain, was also stopped because it relies on Heimdall for “block proposal committee selection.”

Polygon temporary hotfix

Around 4am UTC on March 11, the team successfully released a hotfix that restored operations on the Polygon network, although the bridge itself “will not be active until we fully resolve the issue.”

The most recent update says:

We appreciate your support during this time and have an update: We have implemented a temporary hotfix to unlock the Bor chain and resume production of blocks on the Polygon chain. While this fix is temporary, the team is working on rolling out a longer-term update to address the Heimdall issue.

However, the network bridge will not be active until the final fix is released.
